Career Opportunities

The golden rule, "the more you practice, the more you become proficient" applies to excel in a professional study programme like that of legal studies.

Aspirants who wish to become an advocate and practice law as a profession in India should enroll with the local State or Central Bar council. For newly qualified law practioners, the initial remuneration and earning capacity is dependant on many factors. The main yardstick of success in this field is professional competence acquired through experience and practice and not merely academic excellence.

There are employment opportunities in a variety of designations and roles for lawyers. They can opt to work as legal advisors who work in legal departments of firms and enlighten them about their rights and obligations and suggest the appropriate course of action in business. Though this does not entail practicing advocacy, lawyers with impeccable writing and research skills can work as legal writers, and create law reports and journals. They can also be appointed as public prosecutors who represent the state in sessions courts. The Attorney General is the chief legal adviser to the Government of India.

Besides these options, there are numerous fields in which a lawyer can develop his expertise, a few of which are:

  1. Civil lawyer
  2. Criminal lawyer
  3. Corporate lawyer
  4. Cyber Laws experts
  5. Labour and employment lawyers
  6. Public Prosecutors
  7. Media law experts
